Land Rover Defender Review vs The Hummer H1:
When you think of extreme offroad vehicles, both the Land Rover Defender and the Hummer H1 likely come to mind. While the Defender doesn't have the size that the H1 does, it is certainly built to take the abuse that the most extreme conditions can offer.
The Hummer H1 was originally built for the military but made the transition to a civilian vehicle built by General Motors in 1992. This huge SUV is capable of handling the most extreme off road conditions and is available in three versions; two-door pickup truck, 4 door pickup truck and a 4 door wagon. With a V8 GM diesel engine and either a 3, 4 or 5 speed transmission, everything about the H1 is big and tough. Unfortunately the size and power certainly take their toll when it comes to petrol mileage. They're able to ride through up to 30 inches of water and have a tire inflation system which lets the driver increase and decrease tire pressure from inside the vehicle.
The Land Rover Defender is a generously equipped off road vehicle that is most often used in Africa for safari's, traveling across the desert and also used by the British military. A permanent four wheel drive system gives the Defender great traction on slippery or muddy surfaces. Unlike the Hummer H1, the Land Rover vehicle is able to strike the balance between off road vehicle and civilian vehicle much better than the H1. For everyday family driving, the Land Rover Defenders makes more sense as it's more fuel efficient and comfortable. It doesn't have the sheer size of the Hummer H1, which for civilian use is quite annoying. Throw on a bike carrier, ski racks or even a surfboard carrier and the Land Rover Defender is the clear choice if you want offroad duability as well as everyday practicality.
